Horace Fletcher Tavares, Sr.

89, of Kosciusko, MS, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, August 3, 2026. He left peacefully with his wife and the love of his life of 68 years, Gladys Ann Burdine, by his side. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren for days in advance of his leaving.

Horace was born on November 10, 1936, and was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel John and Hazel Woods Tavares, as well as his brothers, Daniel John “Danny Boy” Tavares, Jr., and Jerry Ray Tavares; and sisters, Sue Tavares Burns and Amie Tavares Charity.

He leaves behind his wife, Gladys Ann Burdine Tavares, and three children, Melissa Burdine Tavares Manseill (Keith), Horace Fletcher Tavares, Jr. “Little Horace” (Deborah), and Christian Ann Tavares, as well as grandchildren Brad, Tina (Craig), Tara (John), Tasha, and Trey (Nicole); great-grandchildren Britlon (Tyler), Peyton, Branson, Colton, Bentlee, Fletcher, and Sawyer; and great-great-grandchildren Kinley and Kendall.

He also leaves behind sisters Bobbie Tavares Carbo, Helen Tavares Farbe, Kay Tavares Patrick (Bob), Fay Tavares Frazier (Charles), and brothers Sammy Charles Tavares and Ricky Earl Tavares (Sandy), and numerous nieces and nephews.

He had so many loves in his life…his Jesus being first and foremost, followed by his family and friends. He was well known for his amazing God-given voice and was able to play and sing with his “Ole Martin” guitar on Sundays in praise of his Jesus for his beloved church family at Hurricane Baptist.

He felt honored to have served his country in the U.S. Air Force, stationed at RAF Sculthorpe American Air Base in England. He was an avid gardener, hunter, fisherman, and renowned cook community-wide. He was full of life and light and will be greatly missed by all.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Hurricane Baptist on August 15 at 2:00 p.m. Any memorial gifts of food or flowers may be made at that time. If you so choose, in lieu of flowers, donations should be made to Hurricane Baptist Church, 11333 MS-12, Kosciusko, MS 39090
