Elner Coghlan

November 3, 1928 — February 22, 2023

Elner Viola Agent Coghlan was called home by her Lord and Savior on February 22, 2023. Visitation will be held at Jordan Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 1, from 12-2pm, with a graveside service immediately following. Pallbearers will be Craig Coghlan, Eric Coghlan, Ozzy Coghlan, Cash Coghlan, Gary Nance, Mike Nance, and Mark Nance.

Elner was born on November 3, 1928, in Neshoba County, Mississippi, to Herman and Winnie (Ferguson) Agent. She was married to the love of her life, Marvin Coghlan, and in 1950, they made Kosciusko, Mississippi, their home. Upon moving to Kosciusko from Neshoba County, Marvin rented the watch repair department in Smith’s Jewelers. Then, in 1958, Marvin and Elner bought Smith’s Jewelers and started the legacy of Coghlan’s Jewelers. Elner and Marvin operated Coghlan’s Jewelers until 1980 when they retired and sold the store to their son, Randy (Patricia) Coghlan.

An avid gardener, Elner cultivated vegetables, fruit, and flowers. She and Marvin loved to travel, and they made trips all over the world. A Christian pillar of her community, Elner was a passionate volunteer at nursing homes in Kosciusko, and she served as a Sunday school and Vacation Bible school teacher to children of all ages.

Elner was preceded in death by her parents, Herman Agent and Winnie Agent Thompson; her brothers, Kern, Keith, and Charles ‘Swinton’ Agent; her son, Randy Coghlan; and her daughter, Marianne Coghlan. She is survived by her sisters Sherlene Nance of Philadelphia, MS and Marie Flowers of Gretna, LA; her grandsons, Craig (Kimberly) Coghlan of Tupelo, MS, and Eric (Samantha) Coghlan of Captiva Island, Florida; and her great-grandchildren, Riley, Allix, Ozzy, and Cash Coghlan.

Elner spent the last years of her life in Northeast Mississippi with her grandson Craig, where she told stories of yesteryear, sang hymns, and inspired those around her. Though we will all miss her sweet, loving demeanor, we delight in knowing that she is dancing with Jesus and those who preceded her in death.
