Joyce "Jean" Adams Prater, 76, born in Buchanan County, Hurley, VA, August 6, 1939, died August 25, 2015 in the care of Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland, MS after a brief illness. Visitation is from 11-12 p.m. on Friday, August 28, 2015 at French Camp Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will be at noon at the church with burial in the French Camp Cemetery. Jordan Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Rev. Alex Coblentz will officiate. Until her retirement in 2011 after raising her family and being widowed, Jean joyfully lived and worked at French Camp Academy in French Camp, MS for 20 years, ministering to the staff and students that she loved dearly. She is survived by her two brothers, Arnold Ray "Buddy" Adams, Jr. of Waco, TX and William "Bill" Monroe Adams of Kosciusko; two sons, Stephen D. Prater of Davie, FL and Jeffrey L. Prater of Hollywood, FL; grandson, Jesse Prater of Houston, TX, her niece, Kristel Robyn Stacy of Orlando, FL; step-granddaughter, Tyra Leigh Moore LeCompte; and step-great grandchildren, Joe Dempsey Tarver and Bailee Jean LeCompte; step-granddaughter, Rachel Abad; step grandson, Michael Abad; and two step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 28 years, Dempsey Lee Prater; her parents, Loretta Ellen Smith Adams and Arnold Ray Adams, Sr.; her sister, Betty Genelle Adams Stacy; and step-daughters, Dianne and Barbara Jean. Her desire was that, in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to French Camp Academy, 1 Fine Place, French Camp, MS 39745. Obituary will be online at jordanfuneralhome.com.
